Causes of obesity

What is obesity ?

Obesity is defined as excess body fat having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more.
Obesity is an epidemic in the United States.

However, the death rates from these diseases, as well as other leading causes of death, have decreased over the past few decades. The one major exception are deaths caused by Alzheimer’s disease, which have increased significantly.

                      Causes of Obesity

Taking more calories than you burn in daily activity causes obesity. Over time, these extra calories store in your body and cause you to gain weight.

Here are highlighted causes of Obesity.

 1.Overeating:



Overeating is main cause of Obesity that leads to weight gain.Fatty foods and sugar  have high energy density.To maintain healthy weight, the average physically active;
            ⚫ Man needs about 2,500 cal/day
            ⚫ Woman needs about 2,000 cal/ day.
Calories more than normal range, store in your body as fat.

2.Genetics:



 It's true that certain genetic characteristics inherited from your parents - such as having a large appetite.Genetics also affect hormones. For example, Leptin deficiency is one genetic cause of obesity. Leptin is a hormone which is produced in fat cells and in the placenta. When high fats stores in body, Leptin controls weight by signaling the brain to eat less. Low production of leptin can lost this control  and obesity occurs. 

3.Physical inactivity:



Lack of physical activity is another important cause of obesity. Many people remains sitting at a desk for the  whole day, prefer cars to travel rather than walking or cycling.if you are not physically active then you are not using provided energy and extra energy is stored as fat in body. Hence ,you may need to do exercise to lose weight.

 4.Poor diet:



Eating a poor diet of foods high in fats and calories is main cause of Obesity. Poor diet which includes, 
                ⚫ eating large amounts of fast food
                ⚫ drinking plenty of alcohol
                ⚫ drinking sugary drinks
If you don't want to be obese you are supposed to avoid all of these.

5. Carbohyrates:


 The role of carbohydrates in weight gain is an indirect cause of Obesity. It increase blood glucose level in body which stimulates pancreas to release insulin and insulin promotes the growth of fat tissue and can cause Obesity.  This higher insulin release contributes to weight gain.

6. Psychological effects:



Psychological effects is also important cause of Obesity. For many people , their eating habits influence by their emotions. They eat a lot in response to emotions such as boredom, depression, sadness, stress, or anger. If you have this situation, it's up to you how would you control it.

7.Medication:




Medication prescribed by doctor may cause obesity .Not all but few ones.

8.Aging:


Growing older is also a cause of Obesity which may lead to less muscle mass and  slower metabolic rate, cause obesity.    

                             Guidelines

Here are certain guidelines with reference of causes of obesity:
             ⚫ Eat a variety of foods.
             ⚫ Choose a diet with plenty of grain products, vegetables, and                         fruits.
             ⚫ Choose a diet low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol
             ⚫ Choose a diet moderate in sugars, salt and sodium.
             ⚫ Balance the food you eat with physical activity.
